What Is the RICE Method for Injuries?

- Rest: Resting the injured area is important to prevent further damage and promote healing. Avoid putting weight on the injured area and reduce activities that cause pain or discomfort.
- Ice: Applying ice to the injured area can help reduce pain, swelling, and inflammation. Ice should be applied for 15-20 minutes at a time, several times a day, especially during the first 48 hours after injury. Be sure to wrap the ice pack in a towel to protect the skin.
- Compression: Wrapping the injured area with an elastic bandage or compression wrap can help reduce swelling and provide support. Make sure the wrap is snug but not too tight, as this can restrict blood flow.
- Elevation: Elevating the injured area above the level of the heart can help reduce swelling by allowing fluids to drain away from the injury. For example, if you have a sprained ankle, you can prop it up on pillows while lying down.
